The Calorie-Burning Power of Fun

by John Hastings

Sure, winter seems like the perfect time to binge-watch House of Cards or work your way through Gilmore Girls (old and new). However: A 150-pound person burns only about 93 calories an hour sitting in front of the tube. At that rate, you’re doomed to gain weight even if you eat nothing but carrots until the final credits roll – and you won’t be doing your fitness levels any favors, either. What if, before hitting play, you brave the outdoors and burn a whole lot of energy while having a blast?

Here’s how many calories you can burn in an hour of cold-weather fun.

Sledding 500*
Downhill skiing 380
Cross-country skiing 640
Snowboarding 380
Ice skating 500
Ice hockey 570
Snowshoeing 380
Building a snowman 285
Having a snowball fight 600

*Estimates based on a 150-pound person and moderate activity level.
