East Hills, NY (February 9, 2016) – Registering its strongest and most rapid growth to date, CareConnect, the first provider-owned commercial health plan in New York State, announced today a 244 percent increase in membership during the 2015-2016 open enrollment season, bringing the number of enrolled members from 26,567 to more than 91,000 as of January 31. This includes 88,277 effectuated members—that is, members who have paid their first premium.

The surge in membership was driven in large part by a jump in small group enrollment, which grew by 526 percent. The new membership numbers also reflect CareConnect’s newly launched CareConnect Northwell Health Employee Plan, through which it covers employees of Northwell Health (formerly North Shore-LIJ Health System) and their dependents. CareConnect now covers approximately 1,500 of Northwell Health’s employees and their dependents. CareConnect saw its strongest growth in Suffolk, Nassau and Westchester Counties. Since the beginning of 2015, the company’s head count has grown from 180 to 260.

“Our incredible growth during the 2015-16 open enrollment period is a testament to New Yorkers’ desire for affordable, high-quality health insurance,” said Alan Murray, president and CEO of CareConnect. “We launched CareConnect because we believed that a new kind of customer-focused health insurance could actually make it easier to get and stay healthy, and we’re gratified to be able to bring our new approach to so many new members.”

With enrollment in marketplace plans surging to over 2.7 million in New York as of January 25, CareConnect has managed to garner a growing share of the New York State of Health exchange’s 827,000 commercial insurance enrollees, as well as gaining many new enrollees through insurance brokers. The company has also seen its mix of business swing from approximately 60 percent individual enrollees to approximately 60 percent small-group enrollees.

Over the past year CareConnect has also grown its provider network, adding nearly 7,000 provider locations across downstate New York, with a particular focus on Westchester County. This has been accomplished through partnerships with a variety of leading hospital and physician groups. In addition, the company has added a number of member-friendly features to its plans, including reimbursements for members of up to $600 dollars per plan year (up to $1000 for a member and covered spouse) for a variety of healthy habits. For members and covered spouses, this includes an innovative reimbursement of up to $300 for entry fees for eligible races and walks, as well as a reimbursement of up to $600 for gym memberships and certain exercise classes, and up to $100 for taking a simple online health risk assessment. Members also have access to a new telemedicine program that provides no-cost phone and online video consultations with board-certified physicians, available 24/7.
